Lions in a cage

Lions in a cage. That is what a good friend once told me.That we are like lions in a cage. Born at the wrong time on the wrong world. At the time I know he was referring to the fact that we are both martial artists. Why are they called the "Martial" arts. This comes from the god Mars, the godess of war thus the martial arts are truly the art of war. But today wars are fought with guns and politics; not with swords and heroism. Those days are long past. So now we are like lions, predators, trapped in a cage called society. Our fangs are dulled and our claws chiseled away.
In todays world there is only false adventure. There are no mysteries left to solve, no where left to explore. Yet so many strive to find a purpose, something that will give their name eternal life, false hope of becoming a hero. But the truth is that no person today is more important or unimportant than another. We all truly live the same life no matter what hand we are dealt. We are born, we grow up, work, and then we die. Only then to be replaced and soon forgotten. Facing this truth makes me feel like processed meat. No matter if I follow my dreams to the work field my fate will still be the same. Just like everyone else.
todays society, though it supplies us with every luxury and makes us fat, it truly turns people into nothing more than an assembly line. And what exactly is produced on this metaphorical assembly line? Nothing. And why is that? Because it is a cycle. Once the product is complete it returns to the beginning to start again. Thus fortifying our cage even more.
I have only found one thing that keeps the rusty bars of this cage from driving me mad and closing in, and that is the people around me. More so, those that hold my affection, the ones I feel strongly toward; that I would protect under any conditions. They make it bearable.
Maybe you're wondering how his applies to art? The answer is simple. Art is more than just pretty colors and creating mood. It is an escape from mundane world we live in and the boring lives we live. Art can put us in a place where heroes do exist and the impossible is reality. It's where our dreams can run free and adventure to where ever they like.
I typed this because I found myself wondering if anyone felt this way other than myself. If anyone else feels like a lion in a cage.
